So let me tell you about my experience with Kirkus Indie, a publication which claims to provide professional and unbiased reviews of indie books.

For a fee, of course.

But that’s not my problem.  Nor is the idea that one might pay a fee and, in return, get a spectacularly bad review.  Honestly, speaking as both an editor and a consumer here, I’d hope so!  The idea of paying for good reviews would be even worse of a scam than the one I’m discussing.  No, my problem with the good folks at Kirkus Indie is that they take your money and then don’t read the book.  And it’s not cheap, either.  So while no, I’m not expecting to pay for a good review, I am expecting to pay for a review.  A review that involves reading the book and then having some, you know, cogent opinions about its contents…
